Susan Collins’ “Record Shows Pattern of Weakening Social Security”

Augusta, Maine – Today, on the 90th anniversary of Social Security being signed into law, Maine Democratic Party spokesperson Tommy Garcia released the following statement on Susan Collins’ long history of voting to weaken Social Security:

“In 2026, Mainers will reject Susan Collins’ record undermining and voting to weaken Social Security and her party’s agenda that seeks to slash the earned benefits Maine seniors rely on.”

Reminder: Maine has the highest percentage of residents over the age of 65 in the country. And yet, Susan Collins has voted numerous times to undermine and weaken Social Security.

  • Collins voted to advance Trump’s tax plan that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security,” and she has a long history of voting for measures that undermine Social Security’s solvency.

  • She was a key vote to confirm Frank Bisignano, Trump’s nominee to lead the Social Security Administration, despite warnings he could threaten benefit payments.

  • Collins’ record stretches back decades: in 2003, she voted against creating a Social Security reserve account; in 2011, she opposed tabling a plan that would have required deep cuts to the program; and in 2017, she supported the GOP’s corporate tax overhaul that further strained Social Security funding.
