WATCH: Garrett Mason Wants to Kick Childless Adults off of MaineCare

Augusta, Maine — Another day, another Republican gubernatorial candidate attacking MaineCare. The latest example comes from Garrett Mason, who is targeting childless adults who currently rely on the program for coverage.

In a recent NEWS CENTER Maine interview, when we pressed to name specific spending cuts, Mason said:

I don’t think that childless adults should be able to have access to MaineCare. I don’t think just because you are childless and you are an adult you should have access to a government program like that.”

Lauryn Fanguen, spokesperson for the Maine Democratic Party, released the following statement:

“Apparently in the GOP primary, the fastest way to score points is by seeing who can take away health care coverage from the most Mainers. While families worry about rising costs and access to care, Republicans like Garrett Mason are obsessing over cuts that would hurt working people, devastate rural hospitals, and leave more Mainers uninsured.”

Mason’s comments are no surprise. He repeatedly voted against MaineCare expansion in the legislature and has continued to side with the same extreme MAGA playbook that would rip away health coverage from thousands of Mainers.

And he is not alone. Jonathan Bush has repeatedly attacked MaineCare too, including floating the idea of using AI to kick Mainers off of MaineCare, kicking working Mainers off the program, and likening MaineCare expansion to Putin bombing schools.
