Maine Democratic Party Statement on Anita Charles’ Op-ed

Augusta, Maine — Today, Anita Charles, a mother, Lewiston resident, and Bobby Charles’ sister, published a moving op-ed in the Press Herald speaking out against her brother’s gubernatorial candidacy. Charles, a lifelong educator and survivor of sexual assault, described how her personal experiences and the values she learned from her mother shaped her decision in this year’s election.

Statement from Devon Murphy-Anderson, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party:

“Anita Charles made the deeply personal decision to bravely speak publicly about her brother. I’m sure she did not come to this decision lightly. Her voice and her story deserve to be heard and taken seriously. Anita is not speaking as a political operative or as a stranger — she is speaking as a sister who knows Bobby Charles personally and felt compelled to tell Mainers why she believes they should choose differently.”
