The final Maine Gubernatorial Debate just wrapped up as Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree faced off against GOP Nominee Bobby Charles and former Maine GOP chairman turned fake Independent Rick Bennett. On the table were issues that have become massively important to Mainers: affordability and energy costs, health care, and protecting our rights. Unsurprisingly, Hannah Pingree stayed focused on what this state needs, while Bobby Charles tried to distract from his Trump-loving history by throwing accusations, and false claims against Pingree.
Meanwhile, Hannah Pingree was laser focused on the issues. She spoke directly to voters about affordability, health care, and housing—issues that with spiking inflation, the Iran War, and more have been top of mind for many Mainers. She said that she will “never give up” on fighting for Maine families, and as Charles and Bennet bickered in the first debate, stated “this is why we need a woman in charge.”
Bobby Charles has a record of supporting Trump and his dangerous policies, such as tariffs, and has worked as a lobbyist for companies accused of defrauding taxpayers. He spent the campaign floundering and has taken more than $50,000 in illegal campaign contributions. His PAC is propping up the independent Rick Bennet, in a sad and desperate attempt to mislead voters.
Over the debates, the topics ranged from housing to the budget gap to ICE. Hannah Pingree touted her plan to spend $ 100 million to amp up construction and increase the supply of affordable housing, and showed her support for tax fairness and her plans for health care. Bobby Charles promoted his budget, which could bankrupt the state and severely cut health care for Mainers.
Outside of direct monetary concerns, the debates also focused on social issues that the Trump Administration has made top of mind, with two prominent ICE shootings in Maine within the past year. Bobby Charles has been caught on tape talking about sending Trump’s ICE to Maine polling locations, showing his ties to MAGA and disrespect for democracy.
Reproductive rights has also been a strong point of contrast, with Pingree being the only strongly pro-choice candidate. Bobby Charles is an anti-choice extremist who called abortion “abhorrent” and wants to talk to pregnant women and girls to convince them not to have an abortion. With the overturning of Dobbs, having a governor who will stand with the Maine women is crucial.
Only one of the gubernatorial candidates has the plan and focus to serve the state, doesn’t have a long history with corruption, and hasn’t sided with MAGA at every turn. This November, Maine needs to choose a leader who is experienced, dedicated, and willing to stand up to Trump—perhaps it’s time for a woman in charge.
