Mason’s Call to Kick Childless Adults Off MaineCare Draws Massive Backlash

Augusta, Maine — Garrett Mason may want to log off for a while. After boldly declaring that childless adults should not be eligible for MaineCare, Mainers flooded social media with confusion, outrage, disbelief, and in several cases, brutal honesty.

Maine Democrats shared the video this week, and while we already released a statement responding to Mason’s comments, Mainers clearly had plenty to say themselves. The TikTok video alone racked up more than 111,000 views.

Even limiting it to Instagram, there were hundreds of responses. A few stood out, including several legitimate questions Garrett Mason should answer.

And frankly, Mason should thank us for leaving out the comments with profanity.

Replies In the MaineDems Instagram Comments:

“What about those childless adults who are disabled?”

“Man whose disabilities do not allow me to sire children here. MaineCare has saved my life.”

“Thanks… so I’d just be dead with my kidney disease. This guy is awful.”

“Including veterans?”

“I’m childless and needed MaineCare, it saved my life. I will be forever grateful for people unlike yourself that give a damn about humans.”

“I love when they show you who they really are”

“This guy wants me to die. Cool. Cool.”

“What in the world does being childless have to do with anything regarding this?”

“What about if they become sick or injured? Only people with children should have healthcare?”

“What is wrong with him?”

“I don’t think people should decide who can and can’t go to the doctor.”

“He prefaced his talk with ‘I don’t think…’ That about sums it up.”

“YOU don’t think PERIOD! 🙃

“Vote against this man. He is showing you who he is. Believe him.”

“Another arrograntly out-of-touch rich politician who caters to wealthy donors instead of everyday constituents.”
